Tragicomedy | 30 min | 2021
Bolzmann is a tragicomedy about fading glory, wounded masculinity, and the desperate attempt to remain significant in a world that has long since moved on.
Former local football hero René “Bolzmann” Kleinschmidt spends his days in the Berlin corner pub where he was once celebrated—now a gentrified bar filled with young patrons who regard him with irony rather than admiration. Of his past triumph—scoring the decisive goal that secured Tasmania Berlin’s promotion—only a dusty photograph on the wall of fame remains.
When a table football tournament is announced, René sees it as his last chance to prove—to others and to himself—that he still matters. What no one realizes is that he is no longer fighting only for recognition. Years of repressed alcohol abuse begin to manifest in visions of his younger, successful self—an overpowering inner voice that drives, mocks, and controls him at once.

Instead of seeking help, René throws himself obsessively into preparation for the tournament. Between barroom realism, training frenzy, and hallucinatory thriller elements, reality begins to blur. The foosball match turns into an existential duel with himself, as René risks losing the boundary between delusion and reality entirely.
Blending social milieu study, genre play, and dark humor, Bolzmann is an energetic yet tragic portrait of a man unable to let go—and therefore willing to risk everything.
The short film received production funding in 2018 from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
